Alexander Stewart (d. December 1794) was an officer of the British Army, rising to the rank of major-general. He fought during the American War of Independence at the Battle of Eutaw Springs.
Stewart enlisted in the Army on 8 April 1755. By 1775 he had been promoted to command the 3rd Regiment of Foot.
During the American War of Independence, the commander of the army at Charleston, Francis Rawdon Hastings, fell ill and was invalided back to Britain. While sailing home, his ship was captured by the French. In Hastings's absence, Stewart, who was by then a lieutenant colonel, was appointed to command the force. He was persuaded to set up camp at Eutaw Springs to intercept supplies being sent to the American force under Nathanael Greene. The encounter turned out to be an inconclusive engagement, and Stewart retired to Charleston. His unit was one of several that was evacuated in 1782 following the capitulation of the British Army in North America. Stewart was made a major-general in 1793, and died a year later.
